For ART+Com, I developed a specialized particle library for Unity's VFX Graph, tailored for large-scale interactive media art installations. This project was focused on creating immersive, dynamic experiences where multiple users can interact with sophisticated particle animations in real time. The core of this system revolves around a highly flexible workflow that allows artists and developers to easily customize VFX Graph compute shader nodes. This enables the creation of complex particle behaviors and interactions that respond to real-world inputs. The library was designed to support multiple interactive pivots, each capable of transmitting detailed user data, such as velocity, position, and relative distance, directly into the VFX Graph. This data drives the particle system, resulting in fluid, responsive animations that are both visually stunning and highly interactive. To push the boundaries of what’s possible with Unity's VFX Graph, I implemented a variety of custom noise functions and developed a branching structure that simulates the growth of trees based on particle motion. This branching system reacts dynamically to user interactions, making each experience unique and highly engaging. Other key features of the library include the ability to emit particles from input images or videos, allowing for seamless integration of media into the particle system. The library also supports 2D Signed Distance Field (SDF) physics, providing high-resolution collision maps that enhance the realism and interactivity of the particles. Additionally, I integrated a robust 2D particle physics system that guides particle movement, further increasing the potential for creative expression within interactive installations. This custom particle library not only expands the creative possibilities of Unity's VFX Graph but also empowers artists and developers to create deeply interactive, large-scale installations that captivate and engage audiences in entirely new ways.
